BlackFest Launch

BlackFest opening night showcased a 20-minute immersive exploration of Black experiences through Afro fusion dance piece by Abisola Ali, excerpts of spoken word poetry by Mike Egbe and music by Dorcas Seb; setting the tone the festival, followed by two plays that are works in progress and a post-show discussion.

Locks by Ash Nugent

Ashleigh Nugent, an award-winning author, playwright and rapper is a mixed-race man from Northern England who found himself in a Jamaican prison.

BlackFest commissioned his one-man play based on his memoir ‘Locks’ at Unity Theatre which details his experience of incarceration. Ash performed extracts from his book and touched on themes of race, sexuality, gender and identity!

Ash is the Founder of Riseupcic and works with prisons, schools, the long term unemployed and those at risk of offending within the wider community.

Half Moon Written by Tayo Aluko

Tayo Aluko is a Nigerian-born actor, singer and playwright, based in Liverpool, UK.

When a spirit of a Nubian Princess visits a divorcing couple though a family heirloom – a mask – what will they discover about their family’s history? Will they preserve their heirlooms and their black history they discover through the mask or will they sell to the highest bidder to settle their finances?

Half Moon was produced and directed in house by BlackFest Limited.
