Festival 2021 Highlights

We are wrapping up 2021 by bringing you a look back at all the amazing memories we shared together and the work we produced with fantastic artists, collaborators, partners, audiences and all our supporters – with a sense of triumph considering how many events and projects we were able to put on here at BlackFest throughout the year all Covid permitting.

2021 was an uncertain year for the arts and performance scene, but despite changes happening in the world we still managed to deliver the Self Love Film project that saw young people that identify as Black exploring Self-Love, Identity and Heritage while developing skills in film, creative writing and visual arts. The Origins Of House Music project celebrated and collated research about Black contributions to the House Music genre, connecting generations through music, producing an original House Music track and creating a soon to be released anthology of their research. The Hip Hop Dance For All explored how to make dance accessible for participants that identify as disabled, allowing them to gain new skills and confidence in dance; exploring movement, music, and sounds.

An unforgettable part of 2021 was our Swinton Bivouac NATURE RETREAT! This was an important time to remind our Black and Brown communities to look after themselves and put Self-Care above all else as an act of resistance.

We delivered an unforgettable festival with some artists performing for the first time since restrictions. People getting together to create, celebrate and appreciate black art and culture with family and friends. We were delighted to continue supporting our artists, community and collaborators and can’t wait for another year of art, creation and connection.
